About me

How I became a translator

I was an avid reader and keen writer of short stories and satires as far back as my school days. After my Abitur (university entrance qualification) in my two specialist courses, English and French, and several months of school exchanges in England and France, I was sure of one thing: I wanted to build on my linguistic talents and use them professionally! I subsequently decided to take a degree in Applied Languages and Translation in English, French and German at the University of Mainz in Germersheim.

I naturally also took advantage of this opportunity to study abroad, spending nine months in Rennes and six months in Edinburgh.

How I became a creative translator

During my studies, I developed a passion for creative translation, inspired by the renowned Germersheim translation scholars, Hönig and Kußmaul. I continued to perfect my word skills during this period and additionally wrote very successful works on rhetorical devices. Moreover, I analysed English and French proverbs and idioms and attended a seminar on metaphor translation. The subject of my degree dissertation was “Language and Style of Afro-American English in American Hip-Hop Music”.

How I became a creative sports and video game translator

After graduating in 2002 I turned my interests and experience into my profession by specialising as a freelance sport and video game translator. In 2003, I also became a member of the German Federal Association of Interpreters and Translators (BDÜ). The association’s members are language professionals with relevant qualifications or experience.
